NALMA’s Specialized Training & Development

In addition to our own trainings, FNLMAQL members have priority access to the National Aboriginal Lands Managers Association’s (NALMA) specialized trainings that take place across Canada. All lands managers working for Indigenous communities are eligible to attend NALMA’s trainings. Consult the Specialized Training Schedule to learn about upcoming offerings.

Professional Lands Management Certification Program (PLMCP)

As a Regional Lands Association, FNLMAQL supports NALMA in its goal of training and certifying lands managers in our region.

To implement the Reserve Land and Environment Management Program (RLEMP), NALMA, in collaboration with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) and subject matter experts, developed the Professional Lands Management Certification Program (PLMCP).

The PLMCP certificate from NALMA is recognized nationally. It certifies that an individual:

  • has the training, experience, and skills required for lands management,
  • stays up to date with the latest developments in the field,
  • and adheres to a code of ethics.

Obtaining this certificate is both a remarkable achievement and an important responsibility for lands managers.

First Nations subject to RLEMP may receive additional funding when they hire a certified lands manager. For more information about this program and funding, please visit the ISC website.

FNLMAQL works closely with NALMA to support the development of Level II in French and to assist lands managers in our region on their path to certification.

Level I – Post-Secondary Training

Level I is a post-secondary program offered through four partner universities. It covers the fundamentals of Indigenous lands management as well as related legal and environmental concepts.

The PLMCP Level I can also be completed in French at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT). For more information on the Microprogramme de 1er cycle en gestion territoriale en contexte autochtone, visit the UQAT website.

For more details on universities offering PLMCP Level I in English, visit the NALMA website.

Level II – Technical Training

Level II is the technical component of the program, delivered directly by NALMA. It helps participants better understand the land, related issues, and their practical application to ensure effective and efficient lands management.

NALMA gives priority to applicants working for a First Nation under the RLEMP regime.

The PLMCP Level II will soon be available in English AND French!

Lands managers who successfully complete Level I (Post-Secondary Training) and Level II (Technical Training) receive NALMA’s Professional Lands Management Certification.

For more information about PLMCP, consult the program brochure or contact training@fnlmaql.ca to request details or express interest.
