Our Designs
The FNLMAQL design elements are meant to reflect the communities and landscape of Quebec and Labrador.
In our 2025 Strategic Planning, we will revisit how we can better represent our organization and membership communities through our title and image. We will be working with our members to find a title that reflects all nations across Quebec and Labrador.
Our Turtle
Our logo focuses on the story of Turtle Island and is meant to represent the turtle who carries the world on her back.
The turtle is shown in a snapping turtle, one of eight varieties of turtles that live in Quebec and Labrador. The Common Snapping Turtle has the largest habitat across the two regions.
Colours
FNLMAQL’s branding includes nine different colours: near-black, off-white, purple, dark blue, light blue, light green, dark green, yellow, and orange. These colours are meant to reflect nature in all seasons.
Fonts and Accessibility
The fonts used on our website, print and online designs often include these four fonts: First Nation Unicode, BC Sans, Canada 1500, and Noto Sans Canadian Aboriginal. These fonts are created by Indigenous designers (excluding Noto Sans Canadian Aborgianl, created in the 1840s) that are accessible beyond the Latin alphabet (used in English and French) in alphabets such as Cree syllabics.
In addition, these fonts met levels of accessibility, including offering San Serif fonts. To meet accessibility standards online and in print, we aim to remove italicized and small-print fonts to help readers who have dyslexia or low-vision. We are working to make our website accessible to screen readers by including ALT-text descriptions with our images and graphics.
Texture, Symbols, and Elements
Our Turtle shell shows the connection between the membership communities through their knowledge, care, and resources. Each dot represents one of the 17 communities.
On our funding page, the symbols were chosen to represent new opportunities (the sprout), approaching deadlines (falling leaves), and ongoing or long-term opportunities (acorn).
